FLAS Fellowships for Graduate Students
FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Illinois Title VI Centers and and are awarded competitively through an annual competition. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply. Priority is given to the study of less commonly taught languages and each Center has specific priorities. A standardized FLAS application is available on-line at www.flas.illinois.edu. Graduate student applications are submitted by the student’s department; undergraduate applications are submitted directly to the Center to which the student is applying.
Application Deadline
All applications are due February 8, 2013. Graduate students should check with their department about its internal FLAS deadline.
For incoming and current CSAMES MA students, the application deadline is Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by 5:00 PM.
Academic Year Award
The FLAS fellowship covers tuition plus a stipend of $15,000. Students are required to pay all refundable fees. Students will be enrolled full-time each semester, and must enroll in a language and an area studies course in both the fall and spring semesters. FLAS fellows must also complete a student performance report at the beginning and end of each award period.
Summer Award
FLAS covers full tuition and fees for an intensive language program, plus a stipend of $2,500. Room, board, travel and miscellaneous fees may not be included in the tuition and fees payment, but must be covered by the student's stipend even if the program bills those as part of the fee. Program tuition and fees, plus UIUC fees of approximately $600, cannot exceed $5,000 (beginning Summer 2011). Summer awards are only for intensive language training and cannot be used for research abroad.
Eligibility
Applicants must be a US citizen or permanent resident and a current or incoming full-time graduate student at UIUC. Applicants are not eligible to apply for support for study of a language of which they are a native speaker. Candidates who currently hold or have previously been awarded a FLAS fellowship may reapply.
